Nursing Subject Guide: RefWorks

What is RefWorks?

RefWorks is a web-based citation management and collaboration tool.  It will allow you to organize, collect and manage your research.

  • create your personal database of citations (w/the ability to attached the full-text article)
  • export citations from databases and the Web
  • generate in-text citations and bibliographies with ease
  • select and change writing styles for citations such as APA, MLA, etc.

A Quick Start

Accessing RefWorks: Click here to access RefWorks.

  • From the landing page for Howard University's RefWorks login page

Creating an Account: New users must first create an individual account to use RefWorks.

  1. From the landing page
  2. Click on Create account
  3. Fill in all fields in the New User Information box
  4. Enter your Howard email address in the email Address field
  5. Click on Register

**Please NOTE:  A confirmation email will be sent to you from RefWorks to confirm your new account.

Adding Citations Manually into RefWorks

  • Go to RefWorks ​​

  •  Select all References,   +Add,   Select Create Reference Manually.​​

  • Fill in citation area about the reference on the right.​​

  • Save.  Assign to a folder.​

Export Citations into RefWorks​ Example from PubMed.​

  • Select citations in PubMed, Send to, Citation Manager, Create file (sent to downloads in your computer.)​

  • Example- file sent to downloads file name _________ ​

  • Go to RefWorks import the file into References by​

                      Select all References,   +Add,   Import References,  ​

                      Select from a file (the file name),  Import.​

                      Type in name of the folder the citations will be in.  Hit Import. Select Last Imported.​

 

 

 

Export Citations into RefWorks​ From Direct Export from Example​ Browzine ​

  • In database (Browzine) export.​

  • This brings you directly to RefWorks.​

  • Type in name of the folder the citations will be in.  ​

  • Hit Import. Select Last Imported.​

Inserting Citation into Document Text​

  • Go to Document such as in Word.​

  • Click on Add-ins from above Word menu.​

  • Click onto + Add ins.​

  • Search for RefWorks. Select add to the right.​

  • Your RefWorks appears on the right.​

  • Select area in document you want citation to appear.  ​

  • Select the 3 horizontal lines (hamburger). Select citation style as MLA, APA etc.​

  • Select the citation in RefWorks. Hit Insert Citation.​

  • Citation appears in location of document you selected.​

Can Create a Bibliography from RefWorks.

  • Go to RefWorks ​

  • Select My Folders,  Select folder with references for the bibliography. ​

  • Select Create Bibliography. ​

  • Select Create Bibliography again.

  • Copy and Paste Cited Work into Reference page of paper, etc. ​

                Or just click on Clipboard.  Go to Document and Paste.​
