From the American Dental Association (ADA): Evidence-based dentistry (EBD) integrates the dentist’s clinical expertise, the patient’s needs and preferences, and the most current, clinically relevant evidence. All three are part of the decision-making process for patient care.
What is EBD?
EBD is a patient-centered approach to treatment decisions, which provides personalized dental care based on the most current scientific knowledge. The American Dental Association (ADA) defines Evidence-based Dentistry (EBD) as “an approach to oral healthcare that requires the judicious integration of systematic assessments of clinically relevant scientific evidence, relating to the patient’s oral and medical condition and history, with the dentist’s clinical expertise and the patient’s treatment needs and preferences.” (American Dental Association)
Evidence-Based Dentistry by Nature Journals
EBD alerts clinicians to advances in dentistry by selecting original and review articles whose results are most likely to be true and useful and summarizing them in abstracts with expert commentary.
Journal of Evidence-Based Dental Practice
The Journal of Evidence-Based Dental Practice presents timely original articles, as well as reviews of articles on the results and outcomes of clinical procedures and treatment. The Journal advocates the use or rejection of a procedure based on solid, clinical evidence found in literature.

Implementing Evidence-Based Dentistry in Your Practice
In dentistry, it can be difficult to tell what works and what doesn't when it comes to new products and recommendations. There are promotions and marketing plans to entice us with everything from mouth rinses to dental instruments. And since we're all busy, there is little time to fully examine options on our own. Fortunately, we have a system in place to help us determine what products work best: evidence-based dentistry, or EBD.
