Medical Humanities: Home

What are the Medical Humanities?

Arts and humanities are essential to the human experience and their benefits to medical education go far beyond joys and pleasures.

By integrating arts and humanities throughout medical education, trainees and physicians can learn to be better observers and interpreters; and build empathy, communication and teamwork skills, and more. (AAMC, https://tinyurl.com/4whymswb)

To introduce the Medical Humanities and to celebrate the diverse backgrounds of our Faculty, Staff, & Students, we will be posting Virtual Bookshelves in the Medical Humanities for Heritage months, Commemoration Months, and other featured topics. All books listed are fully available as eBooks through the Louis Stokes Health Sciences Library and Howard University Libraries. Content will be added throughout the year.

Please don't hesitate to reach out with any comments or suggestions.

The American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) monograph, The Fundamental Role of the Arts and Humanities in Medical Education, provides an in-depth overview of the role arts and humanities play in educating a physician workforce to meet 21st-century health care needs, including enhancing the patient experience, improving population health, reducing costs, and promoting clinician well-being.

We will be hosting an upcoming book club beginning in February 2023 to help introduce the medical humanities to our students, faculty, & staff. More details Please contact us if you're interested in participating.
